River cruising and heel cleeming (hill climbing)

A bit of the communication up to the ride...

Steve on email two days before riding: "OK Guys, This is a call to arms. There are now more French speakers riding than there are Sarf Efricans and others. To all those on temporary or permanant hybernation, now is the time to dust off the riding kit and gather for a show of strength. We can start this weekend, so all those using the sailing excuse, all the competitions are over for a while, come on over to the Gapco (Victoria) on Sunday at 8 am and lets show these lads that talk funny that we're still a force to be reckoned with. Ben will be there with his untrustworthy GPS to lead us all astray, so be warned. Despite all his attempts, we have found a great deal of new tracks. See you all there"

Ben (Bennoit) Ducarme's reply two days before riding: "The Soft Efricans don't like the raining saison... Anyway they are welcom for a good hillclime. Karibu"

Michel Gotab's reply two days before riding: "You mean 'heel cleem"

Julian Freccero's reply two days after riding: "Now we understand why only frenchies are riding while the others stay home with unvalid excuses...they know french speakers are much faster than them, so they scarred to come"

8 at the Gapco filling station

Mbezi River, great way
out of Dar es Salaam, there
isn't any traffic

Moisture in the combustion
chamber? Backfire?

Cruising like this for some 10 kilometres wasn't bad!

Cruising the river - Steve

Swift bike riders in the river. Ben checking he hasn't forgot anything...

First he needed help, Julian... ... then he got to help someone (not in picture,
'cus he's lying in the river) who had left his bike
on a small heel cleem

Water can hide holes! - Julian

Speed essential on a 'heel cleem' - Dev

Julian is... Julian

... and he is selling swimming pools to people! - Frank

He needed to have a pee, so he was determined to go through this - Steve

On his KTM - Ben

Determined, also - Michel

Looking for other heel cleems

Drying socks and boots after the river

Tired? Just press red switch on handlebars, flat out in the grass!

The rains... so green it almost hurts the eyes

Local farmer explains the way Julian declined to believe him, perhaps 'cus the farmer spoke French

Lunch in Kibaha

Two-stroke oil!

Puncture. Only technical issue that day

Makes it look so easy - Julian

A quick pee in the bush - Steve

'Heel cleem'... Julian-style

Chief Navigator (small one) stops, spots a heel cleem (upper left on pic)

Ready for the heel cleem?

Yes!

Negotiating with the Chief Navigator on a heel cleem isn't easy, yet a reverse heel cleem was avoided

Steve got lost during a heel cleem. Heard some noises, Michel
went to look, and suddenly Steve appeared in the bushes

It created a lot of envy amongst the riders that Julian (unknowingly) picked up a souvenir on top of his helmet
